Our Team

Matthew I. Lahana

A second-generation health care attorney, Matt Lahana works closely with medical staff directors, skilled nursing administrators, ownership, and hospital leadership on a wide range of regulatory, litigation, and compliance matters. His government-side background and insights, along with a big-picture perspective, facilitate resolutions in the complex healthcare environment that not only efficiently resolve the issue at hand but also comport within his clients' broader interests and concerns.

As a former Deputy Attorney General in the California Department of Justice, Matt represented various state agencies involving health, education, and welfare matters. Former government clients include the Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), the Department of Public Health (CDPH), and the Department of Social Services (CDSS).

Prior to that, Matt was a Research Attorney for the Honorable William F. Highberger in the Los Angeles Superior Court, Complex Litigation Program.  Consequently, he understands the approaches of government attorneys and investigators and has fostered productive relationships with them. He uses that experience to find solutions for his clients that are creative, practical, and cost-effective.

Before founding Matthew I. Lahana, A Professional Law Corporation, Matt spent a half-decade practicing law at Hooper, Lundy & Bookman, P.C., one of the premier health care law firms in the country.  At HLB, Matt was active in the Medical Staff Practice Group, as well as the Long-Term Care Practice Group, representing some of the largest healthcare providers in the nation.

Matt is also a much sought-after presenter, and has given presentations to the California Society for Healthcare Attorneys (CSHA), the California Association of Medical Staff Services (CAMSS), the California Association of Health Facilities (CAHF), as well as individual client facilities.  Matt has also written chapters in leading health care publications such as the Health Care Compliance Manual's essential guidebook False Claims in Healthcare.

Matt has also completed hearing officer training through the California Society for Healthcare Attorneys, and previously served as a mediator for disputes in the Orange County Superior Court.
